The charm of Xiahe Straight Street lies in its pleasantly scaled streets and alleys, well-preserved architectural texture, and the lazy yet genuine sense of life that permeates the air and the waterfront.
Nature's Creation—The Breath and Pulse of the Canal
The canal is the eternal backdrop and soul of the neighborhood.
The lingering charm of the wharf where three rivers converge: Standing at the street corner or on the small bridge spanning the river, one can clearly see the main channel of the Grand Canal, the tranquil Yuhangtang River, and the smaller tributary rivers meeting here. This was once a bustling wharf with countless sails. Although the throngs of merchant ships are no longer seen, the occasional sand-carrying boats, water buses, and the riverside wharves (stepped wharves) silently testify to the past busyness of this World Heritage waterway. The riverside wharves are excellent spots for taking photos and experiencing waterfront life.
A picturesque scene unfolds along the waterfront through the four seasons: In spring, willows sway gently along the banks, and roses peek out from between white walls and black tiles; in summer, dense shade brings coolness to the stone-paved paths; in autumn, the sky is high and the clouds are light, making the canal exceptionally expansive; in winter, if snow falls, covering the black tiles, it creates an even more picturesque scene. No matter the season, the quietly flowing canal sets a soothing and tranquil tone for the neighborhood.
Humanistic craftsmanship – frozen time and flowing life
Every house and every shop here is a page of history that can be read.
Architectural Style – A Sample of Jiangnan Folk Residences from the Late Qing Dynasty to the Early Republican Era: The buildings in the neighborhood are mostly one- or two-story brick and wood structures, with white walls, black tiles, and wooden doors and windows. The most distinctive feature is the "shop downstairs, residence upstairs" layout, where the ground floor is used as a shop or living room facing the street, and the second floor is used for living. Walking through the alleys, one can see exquisite gable walls, carved wooden railings, and various old-fashioned window frames.
Unique Shops – A Symbiosis of Art and Tradition: The neighborhood is home to many distinctive shops.
Independent studios: such as pottery, leather goods, blue calico, metalwork and other handicraft workshops, where the owners often create in the shop, and tourists can observe and even experience it.
Artistic Spaces: Riverside cafes, teahouses, bookstores, and flower shops offer excellent views and are great places to while away the time.
Traditional old shops: Occasionally you can still find one or two old barbershops or small general stores that have been passed down through generations, full of nostalgic atmosphere.
Everyday Life – The Most Touching Thing About Xiahe Straight Street is that it hasn't become a completely "touristy" area. You might see local residents washing clothes, sunbathing, or playing chess by the river, or smell the aroma of food wafting from a window. This authentic atmosphere of daily life, harmoniously coexisting with the exquisite artsy shops, constitutes its unique appeal.
